New Delhi: A Su-30 MKI fighter jet of the Indian Air Force crashed in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Thursday evening. The accident occurred about 60 kilometers after taking off from Jorhat airbase on a training mission. The Air Force confirmed the deaths of both the pilots on Friday. Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar have been martyred.

How did the accident happen?

The plane took off from Jorhat around 7.30 pm. The last communication with ground control took place at 7:42 pm. Radar contact was lost soon thereafter. The plane fell in a dense forest and mountainous area. The search operation continued throughout the night, but the darkness and inaccessible area made rescue difficult. The death of both the pilots was confirmed after reaching the crash site on Friday morning.

Who are the martyred pilots?

Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar were experienced pilots. Both of them took part in many important flights and exercises. The Air Force issued a statement saying that the entire force joins their families in grief and is paying tribute to the martyrs.

What is the status of the Su-30 MKI?

Su-30 MKI is India's most powerful and versatile fighter jet. In service since the early 2000s. At present the Air Force has more than 200 such aircraft. It is known for its long-range strike capability, BrahMos missile and advanced systems. But some such accidents have happened in the last few years. Investigation is done every time so that this does not happen again.

What steps are being taken now?

The Air Force has immediately constituted a court of inquiry. The work of recovery of debris, black box and technical investigation has started. The objective is to find out the true cause of the accident and prevent such incidents in future.

Salute to both the martyred pilots. Deepest condolences to their families. The whole country is with them.
